Stanford is in a unique position. The program has made 16 College World Series appearances and has captured two national titles.

Somehow, the Cardinal is still playing that role of an underdog. But perhaps that's not such a bad thing, considering they reached the CWS last season after being picked to finish near the bottom of the Pac-10.

If Stanford plans to return to Omaha next June, some things must change. The offense needs to get more productive and the pitching staff must have an ERA better than 4.45.

Accomplishing those goals this fall and in '09 could be tough. Stanford must replace five of its key hitters and several pitchers, including weekend starters Jeremy Bleich and Erik Davis, who signed pro contracts this past summer.

As with most teams, the Cardinal has many holes to fill this fall. However, the talent is there to succeed both at the plate and on the mound.
